Student Spotlight – Saeger’s Jesus Casillas-Sanchez Lights the Way

Every month, the Francis Howell School District Board of Education hosts a representative from the student body to be an honorary Board member at their meeting. The student representative for February, from Saeger Middle School, is the kind of student every teacher loves to have in class. Jesus Casillas-Sanchez is the kind of student who lights the way with his smile and dedication.

Casillas-Sanchez is a proud Spartan, an eighth grader with straight A’s who, like other students his age, enjoys video games – almost as much as he enjoys his karate class. He also runs cross-country and plays in the Saeger Band. But no matter what the young man does, he brings enjoyment to it. Saeger Bands Director Shannon Crepps said, “I’m not sure that I have ever seen Jesus upset, mad, angry, or having a ‘bad day.’  He has such a positive outlook and attitude about everything he does.”

The young man’s positivity is contagious. “Jesus always has a smile on his face, and he is one of the most polite and respectful students I have ever met – to both teachers and his classmates.”

Saeger Principal Dr. Kandy Worley said, “His teachers describe him as kind, polite, caring, hardworking, and a model student. He is an exemplary student at Saeger Middle School and represents our pillars of respect, responsibility, and safety.”

As Dr. Worley said, Casillas-Sanchez is an exemplary Saeger Spartan, and serves as a sort of leader in the band – instead of telling others the way, he shows them the way. “Jesus has played clarinet in the Saeger Band Program for three years,” Crepps said. “He is an outstanding student – he is very dedicated, always responsible, and couldn’t be a better role model for those around him.  He demonstrates responsibility by always practicing, completing his assignments, and coming prepared to band rehearsals.”

Saeger Middle has a positive atmosphere and is a great place to learn, work, and play. And it’s because of students such Casillas-Sanchez, who understand how far a smile – or just simply being pleasant to others – can go. Making Saeger a more welcoming place for all makes other students feel comfortable and, therefore, more successful. Take it from Crepps. “Jesus always brightens my day with a greeting when he gets to my classroom,” she said.

Casillas-Sanchez will be moving on to Francis Howell Central High School, where one of the best bands in Missouri awaits him. And his smile and dedication will light the way.

“I am proud of all he has accomplished in middle school,” Crepps said, “and I know he will do more great things at FHC!”
